Three amazing days in Devonshire Village

By Brian Stephens | Austin Habitat Staff

We want to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to the approximately 150 volunteers a day who gave up their weekend to brave the 100-plus-degree temperatures in the blazing August heat to help change lives.

Hundreds of volunteers worked hand-in-hand with home buyers Tobbie Carter and the Garcia families, who moved closer to finally realizing the dream of home ownership.

It was truly amazing what we accomplished together throughout the weekend. We began Friday morning with bare foundations, but by the time we left on Sunday, framed walls stood high and a tin roof reflected in the late afternoon sun. Our Construction Director Ben Bishop would say we got the houses, “dried-in.” Our hard work could be seen all around us.

There was a lot for a lot of people to be proud of and humbled by at the blitz. And I think we are all forever changed by the experience.
