Austin Habitat supporters have returned from the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project!!!

Habitat for Humanity International’s Carter Project is an annual, internationally-recognized week where President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Jimmy Carter, along with his wife, Rosalynn, join thousands of volunteers to build and renovate simple, decent, and affordable housing in partnership with low-income families.

This year, the project took place during the week of November 15-20,  in five different countries: Thailand (site of the largest build), Vietnam, Cambodia, China and Laos. “The Mekong Build” is named after the longest river in Southeast Asia, which flows through each of these five countries. This event represented the launch of a five-year Mekong Build Campaign, which aims to serve over 50,000 families in the region.

Eliza Evans, former construction Americorps and Austin Habitat staff, left for Thailand in May in order to prepare for the build. Austin Habitat regular volunteer Brian Baugh traveled there in mid-November to lead a house, and their friend and fellow Austinite Sabrina Mikan  joined them for her first build experience.

Sabrina, a doctoral candidate at the UT School of Nursing, even had the pleasure of meeting President Carter. Sabrina was a nurse for Lady Bird Johnson, whose daughter, Luci Baines Johnson, sent a letter to President Carter informing him that Sabrina would be at the Carter Work Project. Sabrina was delighted to meet him and speak with him!
