This past Saturday, at 8 AM, we raised the walls on Joanna Sentena’s home!
The home is sponsored by Austin Energy.
Austin Energy is the nation’s 9th largest community-owned electric utility. They serve 388,000 customers and a population of more than 900,000. They provide service within the City of Austin, Travis County, and a small portion of Williamson County.
Austin Energy is committed to energy efficiency! They even created the top performing renewable energy program in the nation. This made them a perfect fit for Austin Habitat for Humanity, since we always build with the environment in mind. All of our green features usually combine to score four stars under the Austin Green Building Program and five stars under the Energy Star Program.
By sponsoring this home, Austin Energy is making Jonanna Sentena’s dream come true.
Joanna was raised by her grandmother until she was 16. Her father died when she was only 3 and to this day, her mother comes and goes from her life. When her grandmother, the only stability she had ever known, died in 2001, there was a great void in Joanna’s life. As an adult, now trying to raise her own children, she still continues to seek the stability that lacked in her childhood.
For 10 years Joanna lived in public housing, followed by 4 years in Section 8 housing. Her son still remembers the rodents they found in a box of brownie mix when they lived in section 8 housing. Since then, they have moved three times in three years. Joanna says she’s looking forward to “feeling that comfort zone, that I belong, that my kids are going to have something.”
