Austin Habitat volunteers Bill Aguayo, Barry Fisette, and Dell Goss were honored with the “Exceptional Service Award” at this year’s Habitat for Humanity Texas Leadership and Green Building Conference in Austin, Texas.
These three gentlemen have committed hundreds of thousands of hours volunteering and building with Austin Habitat. In addition, Dell Goss is a retired electrician, and he in turn has trained Barry and Bill (and other volunteers) to assist in installing the electrical systems for our homes. This has saved our affiliate thousands of dollars each year in construction costs.
Just last May, they were pulling wires in one of our homes when one of the electrical crew collapsed on the floor. Checking closely, they found a weak pulse and a change in skin color to blue. They immediately administered CPR. While Bill and Barry were busy keeping the volunteer alive, Dell called 911. When the new neighborhood turned out not to be in the EMS database, Dell directed the EMS staff to the neighborhood and even had to stand in the road to get the emergency vehicle to the house.
Bill and Barry received high praise for their CPR skills, commending them that “without your quick thinking, his chances to survive would have been very, very slim.”
Collectively, these men have at least 18 years of service to our affiliate. In that time, they have been site leaders, volunteer crew leaders in all stages of construction, and members of our electrical crew. In addition, they have saved a man’s life!!!
Thank you Bill, Barry, and Dell for your exceptional service to the ministry of Austin Habitat and to your fellow man!!
