Habitat on the Hill 2011

Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, advocating for affordable housing with members of Congress on Capitol Hill.

In addition to immense community support, Habitat’s work depends on crucial government partnerships such as AmeriCorps and National Service, Section 4 Capacity Building grants, and SHOP funding, which are all under threat of being cut or drastically reduced.  Last month, 90 Habitat supporters descended on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to meet with members of Congress and advocate for affordable housing.

Habitat advocates in D.C. were equipped with photos from the “What will you build?” campaign that took place in October. Austin Habitat was the top contributor in the country, with over 430 photos submitted to the campaign.  The photos we submitted were matched with our Texas Senators and Representatives to show strong, local support for Habitat’s work and the need for affordable housing. Thank you to everyone who participated in our photo campaign this fall! Your contribution will help make a difference!

If you’d like to get more involved with our local advocacy efforts, update your skills and interests on our website, and we’ll keep you in the loop when we need advocates!
